Stock

gariepn-6

The nursery stocks a wide variety of indigenous succulents as well as many others from the rest of Africa and Madagascar. With a few exceptions, all plants are properly labelled with botanical names as well as popular names and distribution information where available. The most popular groups of plants include Aloe, Crassula,  Adenium (Impala Lilies), Euphorbia, Cyphostemma, Gasteria, Haworthia,  Pachypodium as well as various mesembs.

A small section in the nursery is devoted to succulents from other parts of the world; these include Agave, Echeveria and a limited number of cacti.

Due to the extensive range of species, variation in both sizes and stock, it is unfortunately not possible to make price lists available. Customers are informed about new stock and activities at the nursery in the regular newsletter.

Gariep Plants always produces stock in a responsible way. We aim to conserve the natural succulent flora and their natural environment by making succulent plants available to the public, decreasing the pressure on wild populations. It is a firm policy of the nursery not to sell field collected plants. A range of propagation methods are used to produce the succulent plants available from the nursery, production by germination of quality seed is probably the most important. Production by the rooting of cuttings, offsets and other propagules, again by using our own mother stock, also plays an important role. Another very important and successful vegetative production method used is the very successful use of local laboratories to supply material produced from tissue culture. Plants are also obtained from respectable wholesale and other nurseries.

Some species that are difficult to propagate or where production material is difficult to obtain will always be available in small numbers and on an irregular basis, other lines (some of them very popular) are almost always available. We strive to offer customers as wide a variety as possible at all times.

Over the years the nursery has managed to supply local and foreign customers with thousands of rare and special plants. Gariep Plants was probably the first nursery in the country making large numbers of seed grown plants of the rare Pachypodium namaquanum (the so-called Halfmens) available to collectors. Other rare plants that have been supplied to collectors include the Spiral Aloe from Lesotho, Aloe polyphylla, many Madagascan Pachypodium species, and Madagascan and Arabian Aloe species.
